Slide DMS026. [kidney, rabbit; PTS] Concentrate on the apex of this pie wedge-shaped tissue section. Many examples of simple squamous and simple cuboidal epithelia will be seen lining the tubules comprising the renal medulla. Because the slide has been stained by the P.A.S. technique + hematoxylin, the basement membranes underlying the epithelium (and outlining the individual tubules) can be readily discerned. Study the location, arrangement and structure of the basement membranes.

For the purposes of classification, the endothelium, composed of the cells lining the blood (also seen in Slide #26) and lymphatic vessels, and mesothelium, the cells lining the body cavities and covering the viscera are included under simple squamous epithelium.
